Whether set in terrestrial oceans or on far-off space stations, Cat Rambo's masterfully told stories explore themes of gender, despair, tragedy, and the triumph of both human and non-human alike. Cats talk, fur wraps itself around you, aliens overstay their welcome, and superheroes deal with everyday problems. Rambo has been published in Asimov's, Weird Tales, and Tor.com among many others. She was an editor for Fantasy Magazine, has written numerous nonfiction articles and interviews, and has volunteered time with Broad Universe and Clarion West. She has been shortlisted for the Endeavour Award, the Million Writers Award, the Locus Awards, and most recently a World Fantasy Award.

I'm not a huge fan of the short fiction form, which I feel often gets used to tell a synopsis of a story that really wants to be longer. I don't often see short stories that really need to be the length they are... that not only need to be short, but that take perfect advantage of their brevity to deliver their artistic payloads.

So it was astonishing to watch Cat Rambo knock it out of the park, over and over again, in every story in this collection. There's not a piece here that isn't served by its length, that I thought 'I really wish this had been long enough to explicate this, or flesh out that, or give me time to live with this.' They were like exquisite little artisanal chocolates: a pop of amazing flavor and then done, leaving you unwilling to read anything else so you could savor all the commingled flavors.

I'm sure there are many good authors writing SF/F short fiction today. I'm not sure there are many good short fiction authors working in the field today. Rambo's the real deal. If you want amazing shorts, wild, imaginative, poignant, beautiful, horrible, affecting, and above all amazing -shorts-, exactly perfect at their length, you owe it to yourself to have a look at her work.

Fair warning: they'll linger long after you read them, good and spooky both.

Near + Far Cat Rambo 9780984830145 Books Reviews

My favorite sci-fi and fantasy stories all have a particular commonality, they stay with me for a long time afterward, sometimes years. They reverberate through my thoughts and experiences, often reshaping the way I see the world. In that respect, Cat Rambo has hit the bullseye. Her prose is admirably direct and her stories fascinatingly diverse. So much so that you often don't realize until later or the second read how bravely she's taken on challenging subjects such as abuse and addiction. She has a rare talent and I feel lucky to have stumbled across it. Since then I've read much of her other work and I look forward to more in the future.
I read through this entire collection in one sitting because I just couldn't put it down.

Cat Rambo has a magnificent ability to draw the reader in and make them a part of the story. I was thrilled and delighted to see the variety of short stories and tales that Ms. Rambo was able to conjure up. She's an incredibly creative writer, and each new world and tale was a delight to read - this collection is a must-read.
The difficulty with this review will be not to gush too much...well-told short stories are potent magic and Cat Rambo's a magician.

If you have an affinity for speculative works, fantasy with sorcerers and mermaids, science fiction with new gizmos, other worlds and aliens, this collection will enchant.

Perhaps it's time to go on a short story binge. If you appreciate short stories by Aimee Bender, Ryan Boudinot, Joyce Carol Oates, Karen Joy Fowler, Carol Emshwiller, Octavia Butler, Rebecca Brown or Julia Slavin, try these too.

Standouts from the collection include "Seeking Nothing," "RealFur" (transgenic living fur coats, eerie and memorable as Margaret Atwood's ChickieNobs in "Oryx and Crake"), "Surrogates" (Insanity Chip!), and "Five Ways to Fall in Love on Planet Porcelain" (a Nebula Award nominee).

A note of caution With themes of alienation, loneliness, miscommunication, and disconnection many of these stories are sad draughts.

Pairs well with "[ { EYES LIKE SKY AND COAL AND MOONLIGHT } ] by Rambo, Cat (AUTHOR) Aug-01-2009 [ Hardcover ]," "The Surgeon's Tale" with Jeff Vandermeer, "Bloodchild and Other Stories" by Octavia Butler and the ineffable "Lightspeed Magazine, February 2014."

asks the silly question, "Would you buy this book again?". Not only would I, but I likely will -- the print version. It's one of those I'd like to have on the shelf. Even with improvements on the newest , I still find e-books unsatisfying for short stories. Maybe short stories are like butterflies more visual, elusive, mesmerizing. They need to flip about and be admired.

OK, now let's go ahead and gush. Cat Rambo has some remarkable geek cred, (roots in D&D, MUD, worked for Microsoft, lives in awesome Seattle-area) and writer cred. She's learned her craft from Octavia Butler (!) at Clarion West. Publication credits. Award nomination credits. She's running for SWFA vice president. If you like Pinterest, she posts the most lovely images. Follow. Follow.

She's currently shopping a quartet of fantasy novels, which seem sure to find a home -- might as well put those on the to-read list now.
